Until 1971 the UK used pounds (\u00a3), shillings (s) and pence (d).<\/p>\n

There were 12 pence in shilling.<\/p>\n

20 shillings in a pound<\/p>\n

240 pence in a pound.<\/p>\n

If basic arithmetic wasn't enough of a problem, statistics must have been a nightmare. This excel spreadsheet enables the input of up to 300 prices in pounds, shillings and pence and calculates:<\/p>\n

  2. Mean average<\/li>\n
  3. Standard Deviation<\/li>\n
  4. Maximum<\/li>\n
  5. Minimum<\/li>\n
  6. Upper quartile<\/li>\n
  7. Lower Quartile<\/li>\n
  8. Median<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    It also converts all the pounds, shillings and pence data into (today\u2019s) decimal currency. This makes pre-1971 and post-1971 comparisons possible. (Full details of the mathematics behind this are in the Wikipedia article cited above).<\/p>\n
