Information
becoming a PASS leader at the University of Brighton
PASS stands for Peer Assisted Study Sessions. PASS sessions are usually attached to an individual first year module. A PASS session takes place on a regular basis (for example once a week). PASS sessions appear on the university timetable, but they are not taught by university staff like lectures, seminars or laboratory sessions. PASS sessions are led by student leaders. If the module takes place in the first year, the PASS leaders are usually second or third year students who have taken (and passed) the module before. Lecturers and other university staff do not usually attend PASS sessions.

Question 4 of 4
4. Question
What happens at a PASS session?
PASS sessions are not lectures, seminars or laboratory sessions. They are an opportunity for students to learn together with others on the module. The PASS leader is not there to teach, but to guide, facilitate discussion and help students to understand the course material. The exact format of the sessions will depend upon the subject, and the module leaders may make suggestions about what the PASS sessions might cover.
The PASS leaders meet regularly with the module leader or other lecturers to report on how the module is going and what particular issues, difficulties or concerns the students may have.
PASS sessions are always optional. Nobody has to go to PASS, although attending should always be helpful.
